Manchester United have identified strengthening their midfield as a top priority during the ongoing summer transfer window as they prepare for Michael Carrick’s first full campaign in charge and their return to the UEFA Champions League.

The Red Devils have already completed the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, with the combined transfer fee reported to be around £83 million.

Following Casemiro’s exit and the serious knee injury suffered by Manuel Ugarte, United are now said to be exploring another high-quality midfield addition to bolster their squad depth.

According to reports, United are targeting “more conservatively priced options” after their substantial spending on Santos and Tielemans earlier in the window.

The final outcome of their pursuit could depend heavily on Real Madrid’s valuation of Eduardo Camavinga. The French midfielder, who joined Los Blancos from Rennes in 2021 as one of Europe’s most promising young talents, has now completed five seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Camavinga, aged 23, made 16 starts in La Liga during the 2025/26 season. Although he is reportedly keen to remain in the Spanish capital, Real Madrid may entertain offers to free up funds for new incoming transfers.

If United fail to strike a deal for Camavinga, reports suggest they are also considering Roma’s Manu Kone, who impressed with his performances for France at the World Cup, featuring in five matches during the tournament.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Manchester United have already made contact with Kone’s representatives to discuss the potential terms of a move.

United are believed to have drawn up a shortlist of several defensive-minded midfielders as part of their continued rebuild of the team’s core under Carrick’s management. However, their pursuit of Atalanta’s Ederson appears to have collapsed, with Romano claiming that the deal, which was close to completion before the World Cup, is now off the table.

As the transfer window progresses, much will depend on Real Madrid’s willingness to negotiate and the player’s stance on seeking a new challenge away from Spain. United’s midfield reshaping remains a key focus area as they aim to build a balanced and competitive squad for domestic and European success.
