New Delhi: Rohit Sharma could be playing his last game for India when the visitors lock horns with England in the third and final ODI of the three-match series at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Sunday, July 20. Rohit has reportedly been informed by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel that he is not part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Having retired from T20Is and Tests, the Hitman is active for India only in ODIs and has publicly expressed his desire to continue till the next year’s ODI World Cup on several occasions in the past. However, India’s selection committee has decided to move on from the senior batter in order to give chances to youngsters as the team prepares for the 2027 World Cup.

As per a report in the Indian Express, the Agarkar-led selection panel has informed Rohit that they want to move on from him following the conclusion of the ongoing three-match ODI series against England. The selection panel spoke to Rohit and India head coach Gautam Gambhir regarding their plans for the team going forward.

As per the report, the selectors don’t see Rohit in the opener’s role for India for the 2027 ODI World Cup and are looking to give chances to the likes of Jaiswal and others. Jaiswal, one of India’s most all-round young batters, has been waiting in the wings for a long time, having already established his credentials in Tests.

Rohit Sharma not happy, wants to continue

As per the report, Rohit is not happy with the selectors’ decision to remove him from India’s World Cup plans, and the senior batter spoke to some BCCI officials on the sidelines of the ongoing ODI series against England. The senior batter wanted to continue playing, having worked hard on his fitness last year.

“Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

“Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court to decide his future,” added the source.

Rohit has been among the runs for India in ODIs, however, the 39-year-old has not looked in the rhythm that he is known for. After getting dismissed cheaply on 11 in the first ODI against England at Edgbaston earlier this week, Rohit played a scrappy knock of 47-ball 26 in the 2nd ODI against England at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday.
