High cholesterol is a problem that does not show any symptoms in the early stages. However, if the amount of ‘bad’ (LDL) cholesterol in the body increases, fat starts accumulating in the blood vessels. This increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and other serious diseases. Often, some wrong habits in our daily life unknowingly lead to increase in cholesterol. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Know which habits increase the amount of bad cholesterol in the body.

Avoid irregular eating habits

Skipping breakfast, eating late or not taking food on time affects the body’s metabolism. This leads to more food being eaten the next time and increases the choice of oily or junk food. As a result, there is a risk of increasing LDL cholesterol in the body. Eating a balanced diet at regular intervals is beneficial.

Excessive consumption of processed food

Chips, biscuits, fast food, packaged snacks and sugary drinks are high in trans fat, refined carbohydrates and added salt. Frequent consumption of these foods can increase ‘bad’ cholesterol, while lowering ‘good’ (HDL) cholesterol.

Sedentary lifestyle is a big reason

Working in a chair all day and lack of regular exercise leads to imbalance of body fat. At least 30 to 40 minutes of brisk walking, light exercise, cycling, yoga or other physical activity every day can help keep cholesterol under control.

Also watch out for added sugar

Many processed foods contain hidden sugars. Excessive consumption of sugary drinks, sweets, bakery products and flavored snacks can lead to weight gain, insulin resistance and can also affect cholesterol. So consume sugar in limited amount.

Insufficient sleep and stress are also causes

If you don’t get 7 to 8 hours of restful sleep every day and are under constant stress, the balance of hormones in the body gets disturbed. This can help raise cholesterol as well as increase the risk of heart disease. Meditation, yoga and adequate rest help reduce stress.

A small change will make a big difference

Strict measures are not always necessary to control cholesterol. Small habits such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, timely meals, limited intake of processed food, adequate sleep and stress management help maintain good heart health in the long run. It is equally important to check the cholesterol level with regular health checkups.
