Argentina have secured their place in the World Cup final for the second consecutive tournament, following a dramatic comeback that denied England their first appearance in the final in six decades.
England looked poised for victory after Anthony Gordon’s goal in the 55th minute, but Argentina’s late surge began when Enzo Fernandez equalised in the 85th minute. Lautaro Martinez then netted the decisive goal in extra time, igniting scenes of jubilation in both Atlanta and across Argentina.
Both goals were set up by captain Lionel Messi, who was given freedom to operate as England chose to sit deep, a decision that proved costly in the latter stages of the match.
While newspapers across the United Kingdom expressed disappointment and frustration, their counterparts in Argentina celebrated the thrilling turnaround, many describing the comeback as sheer “madness”.
The Argentine daily Clarin featured a jubilant image of Enzo Fernandez and Lionel Messi celebrating, accompanied by the headline “Miracle of football”, with the caption “Now for the fourth” — a nod to Argentina’s pursuit of a fourth World Cup title and their second consecutive triumph.
La Nacion also showcased Fernandez and Messi front and centre in a celebratory team photo under the headline “Heroic finalists”.
The publication wrote: “Once again driven by heart, in seven unforgettable minutes at the end, the team turned the match around to beat England 2-1.”
The Spanish sports newspaper Marca also revelled in Argentina’s success, running the headline: “The most beautiful ending in the world.” It described the moment as “madness”, adding, “Argentina to meet Spain after another heroic comeback.”
Meanwhile, Buenos Aires-based sports daily Olé centred its coverage on Messi’s celebration, highlighting the “madness” and using a headline that played on the legendary “Hand of God”.
The Buenos Aires Herald paid tribute to the team’s “bravehearts”, praising their spirit and resilience.
Argentina will now take on European champions Spain in Sunday’s final, while England will face France — who were defeated 2-0 by La Roja in the other semi-final — in the third-place play-off.
