Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni was visibly emotional after his side’s thrilling 2-1 victory over England, a result that sealed their place in the World Cup final. The manager praised the players for their unity, resilience, and humility, insisting their success stems from a spirit of brotherhood rather than arrogance, as they now prepare to face Spain in the title clash.
Scaloni rejoices in Argentina’s semi-final success
Following the 2-1 triumph over England, Scaloni admitted he was lost for words as Argentina reached yet another World Cup final. The Albiceleste boss described the atmosphere as unlike anything he had ever experienced, commending his players for continually exceeding expectations. The reigning champions had to fight hard to earn their spot in the final, but Scaloni maintained that his team thrives under pressure. He credited their determination, coupled with the unwavering support from fans, for propelling them through a fiercely contested match.
Scaloni commends his players’ mindset
In his post-match comments, Scaloni reflected on Argentina’s display and dismissed suggestions that his admiration for the squad reflected overconfidence. Instead, he emphasised their mental strength in adverse situations. The coach grew emotional while speaking about the unity within the camp and the selfless effort of every member of the team.
“I’m speechless. It’s a joy for our country, for our people. The other day I said that this group never ceases to amaze me,” Scaloni told TyC Sports.
“My voice is breaking because this is proof of so many things: teamwork, brotherhood, perseverance, fighting till the end. After this, we’re going to try and win the final, but what more can this team do? They’ve deeply moved me. I don’t have much more to say—it’s all thanks to them.”
He added, “We’ll give everything to win, but it’s hard to explain to people what these players are showing. We’re unique, and that’s not arrogance. These players carried us to victory.”
Scaloni says this team is building its own legacy
The Argentina manager believes this squad has delivered one of the finest performances in the nation’s footballing history. While acknowledging Diego Maradona’s legendary goal against England in 1986, he suggested that the overall display in this semi-final set a new standard for Argentine football.
“We thought the match against Egypt was our best ever, but this surpassed it,” Scaloni said. “No matter who the opponent is, it’s a World Cup semi-final. I don’t know if something like this has happened before. Diego’s second goal will always remain iconic, but today’s performance was extraordinary.”
“This team performs best under pressure. When they sense an opportunity, they seize it. Even if we had lost, I’d still be proud because the players gave everything until the final whistle. We did what we had to do.”
Focus turns to Spain in the final
With the possibility of claiming a second consecutive World Cup title, Argentina now shifts its attention to the final showdown against Spain, scheduled to take place at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.
