Manchester United have lost out on one of their primary midfield targets as Aston Villa have reached an agreement to sign Joao Gomes.
Reports indicate that United were actively seeking a defensive midfielder to strengthen their engine room, following the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, aiming to add more energy and dynamism to their midfield setup.
Last week, The Peoples Person cited a report from Globo Esporte, stating that United had initiated contact with Wolverhampton Wanderers regarding a move for Joao Gomes.
However, Gomes is now set to join Aston Villa after emerging as a top alternative to Ederson, who returned to Atalanta following a failed medical examination.
The report further revealed that United had also explored the possibility of signing Gomes from Wolves during the winter transfer window, but those plans were disrupted when then-manager Ruben Amorim abruptly departed.
Villa have acted swiftly to secure the 25-year-old Brazilian’s services. As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the deal is valued at up to £38 million.
Romano confirmed the development, stating: “João Gomes to Aston Villa, here we go! Verbal agreement in place at €40m fee plus €5m add-ons.”
Known for his aggressive pressing and high work rate off the ball, Gomes has reportedly left Wolves’ pre-season training camp in Portugal to finalise his transfer to Villa Park.
This move from Villa comes as a direct response to Manchester United’s acquisition of Youri Tielemans. The Midlands club were reluctant to lose their midfield stalwart, but United activated the £35 million release clause in Tielemans’ contract after persuading the Belgian to make the switch to Old Trafford.
Earlier today, Tielemans shared an emotional farewell message with Aston Villa’s fans and staff, thanking them for three memorable years and expressing gratitude to Damian Vidagany and Unai Emery for their belief in him and for helping him develop both as a player and a person.
Tielemans leaves Villa after making 134 appearances and playing a vital role in helping the club secure their first European trophy in 44 years last season. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter for Villa, who have now moved quickly to bring in Joao Gomes as his replacement in midfield.
