Manchester United have not yet opened formal discussions with Real Madrid regarding a potential transfer for Eduardo Camavinga this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils have already brought in two central midfielders during the current transfer window, with Andrey Santos joining from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans arriving from Aston Villa.
Despite these additions, Manchester United are still aiming to sign another midfielder, along with a left-back and a left-winger. There is also speculation that the club could pursue a centre-back or even a striker if their financial situation allows.
Earlier in the summer, a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson appeared to be nearing completion, but talks collapsed as United shifted focus to other targets.
One of their key midfield options remains Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, who was omitted from Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the World Cup.
However, Fabrizio Romano has reiterated that Manchester United first need the player’s approval before engaging in any negotiations with Real Madrid.
Speaking on his YouTube channel on Thursday, Romano explained: “To clarify the situation with Camavinga, Manchester United have not initiated official talks with Real Madrid for him. Before any club-to-club discussions between Manchester United and Real Madrid can begin, the crucial factor is what the player himself wants.”
He added: “From what I understand, Camavinga still intends to compete for his spot at Real Madrid. He wants to remain part of the club. Therefore, unless Manchester United receive the green light from Camavinga, there is no sense in approaching Real Madrid for negotiations. Camavinga’s desire is to stay.”
Romano continued: “Camavinga’s name has been discussed internally, as Manchester United are determined to sign a defensive midfielder, as I’ve previously mentioned. But for now, nothing is progressing because everything depends on the player’s stance. Currently, he wants to stay at Real Madrid, prove himself to Jose Mourinho, and fight for his place.”
Meanwhile, journalist Pablo Espinosa has suggested that Real Madrid should consider leveraging the Premier League’s financial muscle to secure a lucrative deal for Camavinga.
Espinosa commented: “We have to assess the market for Camavinga. I believe he could fetch around 50 or 60 million euros in the Premier League.”
He added: “Premier League clubs spend extravagant sums, and often, from Spain, we anticipate interest from England. We need to be pragmatic.”
Espinosa further explained: “For instance, now would be an ideal moment for Real Madrid to take advantage of Newcastle United’s current situation. They recently missed out on signing Manzambi, who was taken by Aston Villa.”
“Newcastle have already sold Sandro Tonali and are also set to part ways with Bruno Guimaraes, meaning they will have funds to strengthen their midfield. This is the perfect opportunity for Real Madrid to offer them Camavinga.”
