IELTS In India To Offer Only Computer-Based Tests From September 2026; Last Paper Exams In August
Freepressjournal | July 16, 2026 6:39 PM CST

The IELTS exam process in India is going completely digital from September 2026. The transition will bring an end to the traditional IELTS on Paper format, marking a shift aimed at offering candidates more flexibility, quicker results, and a smoother test-taking experience.

The move will not alter the structure or standards of the examination. Test organisers have clarified that the computer-based version will continue to assess candidates using the same question pattern, level of difficulty, and scoring criteria that have long been associated with IELTS.

Paper-Based IELTS available only till august

Candidates who still wish to take the paper-based exam will have a limited opportunity before it is phased out. IELTS on Paper will remain available in India only until the end of August 2026.

The final three paper-based test dates have been announced as:

  • July 25, 2026

  • August 6, 2026

  • August 22, 2026

After these dates, registrations for the paper format will close permanently, with all future IELTS tests in India being conducted through computer-based options.

What changes for candidates?

As of September, candidates can select between two types of computer-delivered IELTS exams depending on their choice of completing the Writing module.

The first type of IELTS on Computer involves candidates doing the Listening, Reading, and Writing modules on the computer, while the Speaking module is still taken face-to-face with an IELTS-certified examiner.

On the second type, IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper), is a new option for candidates who feel more at ease using the computer for most parts of the exam while handwriting the essays. In this format, the Listening and Reading sections will be taken on a computer, while the Writing section will be completed on paper. The Speaking test will also remain an in-person interaction with a certified examiner.

Same exam, Different delivery

According to the organisers, the shift is focused on improving the testing experience rather than changing the examination itself. Candidates taking IELTS on Computer will face the same assessment standards as those who previously appeared for the paper-based test.

The computer-based format offers several features designed to make the exam more convenient. These features include on-screen timers, simpler navigation between questions, easy editing options when answering questions during the Writing section, and use of headphones while listening to audio for the Listening test.

An important benefit is also the faster processing of results, as well as increased options for choosing test dates, thus giving more freedom to candidates to arrange the exam according to the deadlines for entering universities or applying for visas.

Transition Starts in September

As the full transition starts in September 2026, candidates intending to take the IELTS exam in the current year will have to take either one of the computer versions of the exam. For those who prefer the old-fashioned way of doing the exam using pen and paper, there will still be the last opportunity until the end of August.
