The opening moments of The Invite feature a thought-provoking quote by Oscar Wilde: “One should always be in love. That is the reason one should never marry.” For actress Olivia Wilde, who has also helmed the film, the line isn’t meant to discourage marriage but to encourage audiences to rethink what it truly means to stay in love. Explaining why she chose the quote to open the film, Olivia, while talking to Bombay Times, said, “I wanted you to think of it in one way at the beginning of the film, but then maybe return to it at the end of the film and understand it a little bit differently. At first, it might seem really cynical and hopefully funny, but at the end, maybe you will consider that what he’s saying is — or what we’re saying with the film really is — that one should always be in love.”

She elaborates, “In the process of love, which is an active thing, marriage sometimes puts an end to that process — sometimes and not for everybody — but that is something to watch out for. There is something that can happen where people become entitled to one another’s love, as opposed to continuing to earn it. My perspective on that is, one can get married and yet stay in love, which means you have to keep that action happening while you are married.”

Since the film revolves around a memorable gathering, when asked who she’d invite to her dream dinner party from Hollywood, she says, “Denzel Washington, Emma Thompson and Olivia Colman.”

On another note, when asked whether she has visited India, the actress-director admits she hasn’t had the opportunity yet. “I’ve never been to India. I would love to visit,” she says.
