Tested: 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT – The Monster Pickup Returns with 777 HP Fury

Pickup trucks today are far more than just workhorses. Many have become status symbols just like other high-end, desirable automobiles. And perhaps none embodies this transformation more than the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT — a wild, stunning, and borderline ridiculous machine powered by a supercharged Hemi V-8 producing 777 horsepower and wrapped in an extra-wide body. The outrageous performance is matched by an equally eye-watering six-figure price tag.

The 2027 TRX SRT gains a massive 75-hp advantage over the previous TRX models sold between 2021 and 2024. Torque has climbed from 650 lb-ft to 680 lb-ft. This extra muscle comes courtesy of a smaller-diameter 3.17-inch pulley (down from 3.43 inches) driving the IHI screw-compressor supercharger, as well as increased fuel pressure for a denser injector spray. The valvetrain has also been upgraded using proven parts from the Challenger Hellcat Redeye to ensure durability under high stress.

Now that the TRX proudly wears the SRT badge, Ram no longer hides the V-8’s lineage. For the first time, this 6.2-litre pushrod 16-valve iron-block engine officially carries the 'Hellcat' name it always deserved. This shift in branding reflects Ram’s acknowledgment of the truck’s true character and heritage.

Driving Experience

Ram makes no attempt to downplay the TRX’s sheer size — it’s built to flaunt its bulk and muscle. It retains the flared fenders and bumpers of the earlier TRX and its RHO sibling (which uses the twin-turbo Hurricane six). Upon closer inspection, new highlights such as the red-accented front Ram logo and bright red tow hooks stand out — subtle touches on a truck that knows nothing of subtlety.

While the extra power is appreciated, the TRX’s hefty 6300-pound weight means the power-to-weight ratio only sees a slight improvement. The 2021 TRX managed 0–60 mph in a wild 3.7 seconds — astonishing for something heavier than two Honda Civic LX sedans riding on 325/65R-18 Goodyear Wrangler Territory off-road tyres. Ram claims the 2027 777-hp version will sprint to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and complete the quarter mile in 12.2 seconds.

During my test drive at Michigan’s RedBud MX motocross track, I didn’t get the chance to verify Ram’s claimed 118-mph top speed. But given the truck’s aerodynamic profile, I have little doubt it could achieve that without breaking a sweat — provided the tyres were rated for higher speeds.

Despite all the raw power, the true star of the TRX remains its suspension. It features coil springs, 11.8 inches of ground clearance, 13 inches of travel up front, and 14 inches at the rear. Bilstein remote-reservoir shock absorbers, controlled by the Active Terrain Dynamics system, automatically adjust to terrain inputs, keeping body motions tidy even under extreme loads.

On tarmac, the TRX annihilates potholes, flattens speed bumps, and charges through corners with surprising stability. Steering feedback is minimal, yet the driver always knows exactly where the truck is pointed — an engineering feat in itself. In Auto mode, the ride is impressively compliant, almost reminiscent of a classic 1966 Chrysler Imperial Crown sedan in its comfort.

The TRX’s 777 hp and 680 lb-ft are channeled through an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a full-time two-speed transfer case. With drive modes including Sport, Tow, Snow, Mud/Sand, Rock, Baja, and Custom, there’s plenty to explore. On the motocross track, the truck displayed remarkable agility, sliding and soaring with enthusiasm. Its balance and stability remain hallmarks of the TRX lineup.

Despite its supertruck persona, the TRX still fulfills its pickup duties, capable of towing up to 8100 pounds and carrying modest loads in its 5-foot-7-inch bed. The suspension is still its most impressive component, while the Hellcat engine adds a thrilling soundtrack to the mix.

Everyday Usability

Parking the TRX at a crowded 7-Eleven is a challenge — fitting this behemoth between smaller cars requires skill and nerve. It draws attention everywhere it goes, its presence impossible to ignore.

Those who find the standard TRX too understated can opt for the ₹10,000 Bloodshot Night Edition. This version features bold side graphics, a hand-painted gloss-black roof, a distinctive hood stripe, carbon-fibre accents, and a special glass-encased plaque on the centre console.

Inside, the cabin gains red piping on the heavily bolstered leather seats designed to hold occupants securely through spirited driving. The new solid gear shifter replaces the Jeep Grand Cherokee-sourced unit from the earlier TRX and feels far more satisfying than the rotary selector in lesser Ram 1500s.

The interior also boasts a massive 14.5-inch central touchscreen paired with a digital instrument cluster featuring exclusive TRX graphics. The 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio setup ensures premium sound quality, complemented by a head-up display and a digital rear-view mirror.

This truck is not meant for daily commutes or regular hauling. It’s an extravagant, highly capable, and wildly entertaining machine — a massive toy that happens to have a load bed.

Should You Buy One?

As the flagship of the Ram 1500 range, the TRX is the most expensive model the brand offers. Priced from ₹102,790 (including ₹2795 destination charge), it demands deep pockets. The 2027 model is significantly costlier than the first-generation TRX, which launched in late 2020 at ₹71,690 including destination.

The TRX’s price hike places it in a higher market tier. In contrast, the 540-hp Ram 1500 RHO — which shares much of the TRX’s suspension hardware — starts at ₹76,590. While less flamboyant, it’s a far more affordable option.

The EPA rates the TRX’s fuel efficiency at 10 mpg in the city and 14 mpg on the highway. But driven the way it encourages, expect its 33-gallon tank to empty far faster than you’d like.

Highlights and Drawbacks

• Ferocious Hellcat power

What We Don’t:
• Massive thirst for fuel

• Gigantic proportions

Favourite Feature: The near-magical suspension dampers — nothing this large should be able to fly and land so gracefully without breaking a sweat.
