Geely is preparing to challenge models such as the Renault 5 and Volkswagen ID Polo with its latest small electric hatchback, the Geely EX2, which will launch in the UK with a starting price of £20,990.
The EX2, currently China’s best-selling car, represents the Chinese manufacturer’s third model introduction in the UK following the EX5 EV and the Starray PHEV. This new entrant aims to strengthen Geely’s growing presence in the European market.
UK sales of the EX2 are scheduled to commence next month, with three distinct variants available: Pro (£20,990), Max (£23,490), and Ultra (£25,490).
The base Pro variant comes equipped with a 35kWh battery pack paired with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 80bhp, offering an official driving range of 155 miles. This performance situates it alongside compact electric models like the Renault Twingo and Honda e.
Stepping up to the Max version upgrades the powertrain with a 47kWh battery and a 114bhp motor, extending the claimed range to 214 miles. This positions the EX2 Max between the Urban Range and Comfort Range versions of the Renault 5 in terms of capability and price.
Inside, the EX2 features a modern digital layout dominated by a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, which controls most in-car functions. The system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard, ensuring seamless smartphone integration.
Aside from its enhanced powertrain, the Max variant mirrors the Pro in equipment. The top-tier Ultra model adds premium touches such as ambient lighting, a 360-degree camera system, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel, offering a more upscale experience.
The EX2 plays a key role in Geely’s ambitious expansion strategy for the UK market. The brand plans to offer a total of 10 models by 2029 and is targeting annual sales of 100,000 vehicles by 2030.
For context, it took South Korean brand Kia several decades to hit a similar milestone, finally surpassing the 100,000-unit annual sales mark in 2022.
Geely’s success in its domestic market is already evident, with 450,000 units of the EX2 sold in China last year alone.
Michael Yang, General Manager of Geely Auto UK, emphasised that the car’s “attractive pricing” is one of its most compelling advantages. The company aims to present itself as a value-driven alternative to established European manufacturers, with hopes of drawing customers away from mainstream brands.
