The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the authorities to closely monitor the health of environmentalist and activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, and ensure immediate medical intervention whenever necessary.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia observed that human life is of paramount importance and ordered government doctors to conduct daily health check-ups of Wangchuk during his ongoing fast.

Appearing for both the Centre and the Delhi government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that there was no objection to carrying out regular medical examinations, emphasizing that every individual's life is precious.

Taking note of the submission, the bench directed the authorities to continuously monitor Wangchuk's medical condition and provide all necessary healthcare support if his health deteriorates.

"We appreciate the stand taken by the Solicitor General and direct that Wangchuk's medical condition shall be monitored on a daily basis and whatever medical intervention is required shall be taken," the court said.

The order came while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking urgent judicial intervention over Wangchuk's health as his indefinite fast continues at the protest site.

The hunger strike is part of an ongoing demonstration at Jantar Mantar, where the Cockroach Janta Party has been protesting for over 25 days. The protesters are demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.

Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest on June 28 and has remained on an indefinite fast since then, prompting growing concerns over his health.
