Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026: Puri’s world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra is not merely a religious festival but a magnificent confluence of devotion, tradition, and faith. It is believed that during this time, Lord Jagannath himself, accompanied by his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, rides on chariots to appear before devotees and grant them *darshan* (holy viewing). In 2026, this sacred journey will commence on July 16 and conclude on July 27 with the *Niladri Bije* ritual. The Puri Rath Yatra finds mention in ancient religious scriptures; the *Utkal Khanda* of the *Skanda Purana* describes the significance of Lord Jagannath’s *Gundicha Yatra*, the mounting of the chariots (*Ratharohan*), and the viewing of the chariots (*Ratha Darshan*). According to religious beliefs, participating in the Rath Yatra—by pulling the Lord's chariot and witnessing the deity—bestows spiritual merit upon the devotees.

Why does the Rath Yatra take place on *Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya*?
The Jagannath Rath Yatra is organized annually on the *Dwitiya Tithi* (second day) of the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of *Ashadha*. In astrology and religious traditions, the *Shukla Paksha* is considered auspicious for undertaking noble tasks. Similarly, the *Dwitiya Tithi* is regarded as propitious for journeys, religious rituals, and the commencement of new endeavors. For this reason, Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra is scheduled on this specific date.

How is the Rath Yatra schedule determined?
The entire schedule for the Jagannath Rath Yatra is determined based on the Vedic *Panchang* (almanac), the Odia *Panchang* (*Panji*), the ancient protocols of the *Shrimandir* (Jagannath Temple), and established religious traditions. Each ritual associated with the Yatra holds special significance, and all ceremonies are performed according to precise dates and timings.

Rath Yatra Schedule
July 15, 2026, Wednesday – *Nabajaubana Darshan*
Following *Snana Purnima* (the bathing festival), Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra observe a period of seclusion (*Ekantavasa*). Subsequently, devotees get their first glimpse of the deities in their rejuvenated, youthful form—an event known as *Nabajaubana Darshan*. 

16 July 2026, Thursday – Grand Ratha Yatra
On the occasion of *Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya*, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra depart from the *Shrimandir* (main temple) for the *Gundicha* Temple, riding their respective grand chariots. This day marks the commencement of the main Ratha Yatra.

20 July 2026, Monday – Hera Panchami
*Hera Panchami* is observed during the deities' sojourn at the *Gundicha* Temple. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi visits the *Gundicha* Temple to meet Lord Jagannath. This tradition reflects the bond between Lord Jagannath and Goddess Lakshmi.

23 July 2026, Thursday – Sandhya Darshan
Special evening *darshan* (viewing) of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra takes place at the *Gundicha* Temple. A large number of devotees arrive on this day to seek blessings.

24 July 2026, Friday – Bahuda Yatra
After completing their stay at the *Gundicha* Temple, the deities return to the *Shrimandir* riding their chariots. This return journey is known as *Bahuda Yatra*.

25 July 2026, Saturday – Suna Besha
Following the *Bahuda Yatra*, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are adorned with gold ornaments. This magnificent golden attire is known as *Suna Besha*.

26 July 2026, Sunday – Adhara Pana
On this day, a special sweet drink known as *Adhara Pana* is offered to the deities. This ritual is one of the significant traditions of the Ratha Yatra.

27 July 2026, Monday – Niladri Bije
*Niladri Bije* marks the final phase of the Ratha Yatra. On this day, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra are ceremoniously re-installed upon the *Ratna Simhasana* (Gem Throne) within the *Shrimandir*. This concludes the nine-day Jagannath Ratha Yatra.
