New Delhi: Tension has once again increased rapidly in the Middle East. The US has launched a new campaign of air strikes against Iran, targeting military bases that were allegedly being used to threaten commercial and naval ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. After these attacks, the situation in the region has become more serious and new concerns have arisen regarding global trade and energy supply.

US Army launched second wave attacks

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the second wave of attacks was launched on Wednesday (local time) on the instructions of President Donald Trump. CENTCOM said that the purpose of the action was to weaken Iran’s military capabilities, which could affect the security of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The US military says that this operation was conducted to ensure the security of international sea routes and to respond to increasing threats in the region.

News of explosions in many cities of Iran

After the attacks, Iranian media reported explosions in the southern cities of Ahvaz and Chabahar. However, whether these blasts are directly to American air action or not has not been officially confirmed yet.

Even before this, the US Army had conducted a military operation on Greater Tunb Island targeting Iran’s coastal defense system, cruise missile storage and launch sites. America claims that these attacks have weakened Iran’s ability to carry out maritime attacks.

Tension increased on the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is counted among the most important maritime trade routes in the world. A large part of the global oil and gas supply passes through this route. In such a situation, the increasing tension here can have a direct impact on the international market and energy supply.

Along with re-imposing naval blockade on Iran, America has also intensified its military campaign. The American side says that this step has been taken in response to increasing threats to ships.

Crisis looms over ceasefire again

According to Iranian officials, a military barracks was also targeted in the latest attacks, killing several soldiers and injuring a large number of people.

Experts believe that these incidents have weakened the earlier interim ceasefire between the two countries. Besides, the ongoing talks regarding Iran’s nuclear program may also be affected. If the situation does not improve soon, the Middle East may once again move towards a major military conflict.
