Luka Modric has reportedly chosen to extend his stay at AC Milan by agreeing to sign a new one-year contract at San Siro. The experienced Croatian midfielder made the decision soon after his country’s disappointing early exit from the 2026 World Cup.

Amorim’s influence key in negotiations

According to Sky Sport Italia, persistent efforts from the AC Milan management have finally convinced Modric to remain part of the project. The club’s board, along with newly appointed head coach Ruben Amorim, have been working tirelessly to persuade the veteran that he still plays a vital role in the team’s plans. Amorim, who recently took charge, has been clear about wanting Modric to anchor the midfield during the team’s transition phase.

Modric has long expressed his fondness for the Rossoneri, having supported the club during the era of fellow Croatian Zvonimir Boban. Although his previous contract officially expired on June 30, his emotional attachment to the club and the opportunity to play under Amorim’s fresh tactical approach seem to have been decisive in his decision to stay for at least another season.

Upcoming Australian tour

Currently enjoying a well-earned holiday, the Ballon d’Or winner is expected to give his final approval to the new deal in the coming days. Once confirmed, he will join his teammates for pre-season training ahead of the club’s high-profile tour of Australia. The tour, which begins on July 26, will provide Modric with an ideal opportunity to integrate with the squad under Amorim’s guidance.

Having a player of Modric’s experience available for the trip is seen as a major boost for Milan’s sporting and commercial ambitions abroad. The Rossoneri are preparing for a challenging 2026-27 Serie A campaign, eager to rebound after finishing fifth last season and securing a Europa League spot.

Remarkable consistency at 40

Though Modric will turn 41 in September, he continues to impress with his fitness and influence in the midfield. His numbers from last season underline his enduring quality, having made 37 appearances for Milan across all competitions. The Croatian contributed two goals and three assists, accumulating 2,864 minutes of playing time. Those figures might have been even higher if not for a brief spell on the sidelines in May due to a fractured cheekbone.

His ability to dictate the rhythm of matches remains world-class, making his one-year contract extension a logical step for a Milan side seeking leadership and experience. Modric joined Milan on a free transfer in July 2025 after an illustrious 13-year career at Real Madrid, during which he won numerous trophies, including six Champions League titles.

Recovering from World Cup disappointment

After Croatia’s round-of-32 elimination following a 2-1 defeat to Portugal, Modric is determined to turn the page and focus on club football. The contrast between this exit and his previous achievements—reaching the 2018 World Cup final and securing third place in 2022—has been stark. As he prepares for the new season, Modric’s goal is to use his vast experience to inspire AC Milan’s resurgence and lead the Rossoneri back to their former glory.
