Andrey Santos has officially departed from Chelsea to join Manchester United, after recognising that his route to consistent first-team football at Stamford Bridge had effectively closed. With intense competition in midfield and no European fixtures to provide additional opportunities, the Brazilian midfielder requested a transfer — a decision that culminated in a lucrative move to Old Trafford aimed at accelerating his professional growth.
Midfield congestion at Stamford Bridge
As reported by the Daily Mail, Santos initiated his exit from Chelsea due to the overcrowded nature of the club’s midfield. Following Moises Caicedo’s contract renewal and Chelsea’s hefty £120 million valuation of Enzo Fernandez, it became clear that significant playing minutes would be difficult to secure. With additional competition from Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo in central areas, Santos realised his chances of regular action were rapidly diminishing.
Given that Chelsea face a season without European football, squad rotation opportunities have also reduced. Consequently, Santos instructed his representatives to explore alternative clubs, which resulted in Manchester United sealing his transfer for an initial £48 million fee plus £2 million in performance-based add-ons.
Struggles under Enzo Maresca
Although Chelsea had previously rejected a £45 million offer from West Ham, Santos failed to deliver consistent performances when handed opportunities. During a Premier League clash against Brighton, a poor touch from the Brazilian led to a misplaced pass that ultimately caused Trevoh Chalobah to be sent off in a match Chelsea lost 3-1. Enzo Maresca, the manager at the time, was visibly displeased with the costly mistake. Following that incident, Maresca substituted Santos at half-time in the following match against Nottingham Forest and subsequently restricted him to appearances mainly in domestic cup and lesser European fixtures. Despite his obvious technical talent, Santos found it difficult to regain Maresca’s full confidence as Chelsea finished the Premier League season in 10th position.
Liam Rosenior’s diminishing confidence
The appointment of Liam Rosenior was initially seen as a fresh opportunity for Santos at Chelsea, particularly since the pair had previously worked successfully together at Strasbourg. Santos enjoyed a promising run of starts under Rosenior’s early tenure. However, the relationship deteriorated following a February fixture against Burnley, when Rosenior publicly criticised a player for failing to mark Zian Flemming, whose stoppage-time header secured a 1-1 draw. Not long after, Santos was spotted marking Flemming at another corner, suggesting that he was the player Rosenior had referred to. As the campaign advanced, Santos found himself benched and unused in Chelsea’s final two matches. During an interim spell under Calum McFarlane, he committed another defensive lapse in a game against Manchester City.
What lies ahead for Andrey Santos?
Manchester United’s acquisition of Santos represents an investment in potential rather than a finished product. The 20-year-old must now adapt to life at Old Trafford and focus on earning consistent playing time in Erik ten Hag’s line-up. If Santos can cut out his defensive lapses and demonstrate his excellent passing range, he has a genuine chance to prove Chelsea’s decision wrong and evolve into a key figure for Manchester United.
