The Supreme Court on Tuesday gave its verdict on an important petition filed regarding the country’s biggest medical entrance examination. The court made it clear that there is no need for further hearing in this matter, because the issue that was challenged has now passed.
After the comments of the Supreme Court, the ongoing legal debate regarding NEET exam has come to an end for the time being. However, the court also indicated that issues to reforms in the examination system can be taken up through a separate legal process.
Refused to hear re-examination
The Supreme Court rejected the petition challenging the decision of the National Testing Agency to conduct re-examination of NEET UG 2026, considering it ineffective. During the hearing, the court said that re-examination has already been conducted. In such a situation, there is no justification left for giving decision on this petition.
This advice was given on the demand to reform
On behalf of the petitioner, it was said that the petition was not only opposed to the re-examination, but also included a demand for institutional reforms in the National Testing Agency.
On this, the Supreme Court orally said that if issues to reform in the examination system have to be raised then the petitioners can file intervention applications in the already pending cases to this subject.
Exam was held again after paper leak
The petition was filed on behalf of Dr. Mangala Kohli, former Assistant Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services. In the petition, the decision to cancel the NEET exam held on May 3, 2026 and re-conduct it on June 21 following allegations of paper leak was challenged.
What was the argument in the petition
The petitioner said that the alleged irregularities were limited to a few selected individuals, examination centers and gangs. In such a situation, it was not appropriate to conduct re-examination of lakhs of candidates from across the country.
The petition also demanded that an independent expert committee be constituted to review the digital question paper system, biometric verification, artificial intelligence based monitoring, computer based examination system and the functioning of the National Examination Agency to make the national level examinations more secure in future.
