Chennai Super Kings have reportedly started their hunt for a new head coach following the end of Stephen Fleming's long stint with the franchise. After another gloomy IPL edition, the five-time champions are gearing up for a new chapter with their legendary former skipper MS Dhoni said to wield huge influence on the team's future.
After failing to make the playoffs in three seasons in a row, CSK management decided to shake up its coaching setup. After his successful five-title-winning run, Fleming has now taken a backseat as they look to rebuild for IPL 2027.
RevSportz reports that the franchise is not rushing to replace the head coach. They will take their time to evaluate all options available to them before making a final decision.
MS Dhoni to Lead the Coaching Search
According to the report, Dhoni's bond with CSK owners will ensure he has a huge say in who will replace Fleming. Being the face of the franchise for close to two decades, Dhoni will have the final opinion before a decision is finalised.
As per RevSportz:
"The former captain is going to play a significant role in picking Fleming's successor. The five-time IPL champions, who haven't reached the playoffs since their title triumph in 2023, will take time to land their preferred candidate, and Dhoni will have a say in that."
Although unable to compete in the IPL 2026 due to a catastrophic injury, Dhoni stayed with the team for the duration of the season, aiding young and talented cricketers from the dugout.
The veteran was retained by the franchise on an uncapped basis before the IPL 2025 mega auction and is believed to be retained for a further two years through to 2027.

Mentor Role Also on the Cards
In addition to aiding in the selection of the new head coach, Dhoni is also considering taking up an official mentoring position in the immediate future.
An article later claimed that CSK is considering giving Dhoni more powers in cricket operations, either in IPL 2027 or the kick-start of the next cycle in 2028.
RevSportz reported:
"Meanwhile, the idea to make him the team mentor could be a possibility; it is learnt. It might happen next season itself or at the start of the new cycle in 2028. According to sources, though, even without an official designation, Dhoni is set to be given control of the cricket side of the affairs. In crisis, CSK have turned to the man who has presided over their five IPL trophies."
The new head coach will have to work very closely with Dhoni to help Chennai Super Kings rebuild in a way that they give themselves another chance to win the title after a full three years.
