The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the format for the World Cup 2027. Along with this, the apex body of cricket has also rejected all those media reports in which it was being claimed that the tournament will be reduced to 12 teams instead of 14. With the announcement of ICC, it has been confirmed that the tournament of only 14 teams will be played. Cricket’s apex body has announced that 14 teams will participate in the World Cup 2027. This World Cup will be played in three rounds. Before the World Cup, there was speculation that 14 teams would participate, which would be divided into two groups, but ICC has made some changes in it.
World Cup 2027 will be played in three rounds
Giving information, ICC has said that in the Annual General Meeting held in Edinburgh, it has been decided to make some changes in the format of the World Cup. This also includes World Cup 2027 and T20 World Cup 2028. The World Cup 2027, which is to be played in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, will be held in three rounds. In the first round, teams ranked 11, 12 and 13 will play a super series among themselves. Out of these, the team on top will qualify for the second round. There will be 12 teams in the second round, which will be divided into two groups. Out of these, the top-3 teams will qualify for Super-7 i.e. the third round. There will be 7 teams in the third round, where the tournament will proceed in round robin format and the top-4 teams will qualify for the semi-finals.
When and where will World Cup 2027 be played?
World Cup 2027 will be played in three countries, which include South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. The World Cup will be played in October-November. ICC has brought this type of format in the World Cup for the first time. T20 World Cup 2028 is to be played jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand. ICC has also kept the next World Cup limited to 20 teams. However, where the Super-8 format was played in 2026, there will now be a Super-10. In such a situation, 10 teams will be able to play in the second round.
