Darren Watkins Jr., better known as Speed, has been carrying a jinx since the start of the 2026 World Cup, as the teams he supports have all lost.

To test the theory during the quarterfinal clash between Argentina and Switzerland on July 11, Speed decided to attend the match wearing an Argentina jersey, intending to place that curse on the defending champions.

However, his wish did not come true, as Argentina secured a thrilling 3-1 win after extra time.

Throughout the match, Speed showed his frustration after each of Argentina’s goals. Following Dan Ndoye’s equalizer for Switzerland in the 67th minute, Speed was perhaps the only spectator wearing an Argentina jersey who celebrated the goal. The American streamer even performed the “Siuu” celebration, the signature move of his idol Ronaldo.

His joy, however, was short-lived. After Julian Alvarez curled a right-footed shot to make it 2-1 for Argentina in the 112th minute, Speed began to lose his composure. When Lautaro Martínez scored the winning goal in the 120th minute, securing a 3-1 victory, the American streamer left the stadium early.

“Game’s over with,” Speed said in a post-match video. “The act is over with. They broke the ‘curse.’ Congratulations Argentina. I support Argentina today to see if it was real. Seems like that they broke the curse.”

Speed is famously known as a massive fan of Ronaldo, the Portuguese superstar often viewed as the biggest rival of Argentina captain Messi. Speed frequently wears Ronaldo’s jersey while livestreaming, filming music videos and attending matches to cheer him on.

The 21-year-old streamer currently has 57.6 million subscribers on YouTube.

During a livestream on July 10, Speed emotionally showed off a special gift Ronaldo had personally sent him, a highly exclusive pair of game-worn Nike Mercurial Superfly 11 “CR7 Gold Scorpion” boots, Times of India reported.

Beyond livestreaming, Speed has released several football-themed singles, such as “Ronaldo (SEWEY)” and “World Cup,” which have garnered hundreds of millions of views across platforms.

At the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo and Portugal were eliminated on July 6 after suffering a 0-1 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16. Argentina have reached the semifinals and are set to face England on Wednesday afternoon (local time). If they secure a win, Messi and his teammates will advance to the final against Spain.

In the individual race for the World Cup Golden Boot, Messi and Kylian Mbappe are currently tied at the top of the scoring charts with eight goals each. However, with France’s defeat against Spain in the semis on Tuesday, Messi will have the chance to win it if he scores against England.
