After three decades of portraying strong female characters, Rani Mukerji is set to be honored with an honorary doctorate. La Trobe University will present her with an Honorary Doctor of Letters during the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2026, with the ceremony scheduled for August 14 at Federation Square. This recognition celebrates her significant contributions to cinema and her advocacy efforts.
This year marks nearly thirty years for Mukerji in the film industry, where she has chosen roles that often serve as social commentary. Notable films such as Black, No One Killed Jessica, Hichki, the Mardaani series, and Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway have all contributed to vital discussions surrounding women's rights, disability inclusion, and justice. Beyond her on-screen work, she actively supports initiatives related to children's health, education, and community welfare.
Expressing her gratitude, Mukerji stated, “I am truly honored to receive this Honorary Doctor of Letters from La Trobe University. Cinema has been my greatest teacher throughout my journey, and I firmly believe in the power of storytelling to foster empathy, ignite discussions, and drive positive change.”
She further remarked, “Receiving this honor during the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, which has consistently showcased Indian cinema globally, makes it even more meaningful. I am thankful to La Trobe University and IFFM for this remarkable recognition.”
John Brumby AO, Chancellor of La Trobe University, commented, “Rani Mukerji’s extraordinary body of work has gone beyond mere entertainment, initiating crucial dialogues on social justice, equality, and inclusion. Her lasting influence on cinema, along with her steadfast dedication to humanitarian efforts, makes her a deserving recipient of this honorary doctorate. We are thrilled to acknowledge her accomplishments and welcome her into the La Trobe University community.”
Mitu Bhowmick Lange, Festival Director of IFFM, shared similar sentiments, praising Mukerji as one of the finest talents of her generation and highlighting the significance of this moment for the festival.
The IFFM 2026 will take place from August 13 to 23, continuing its tradition as one of the largest platforms for celebrating Indian cinema internationally. The festival will unite filmmakers and artists from India and Australia through screenings, premieres, and panel discussions. Mukerji's honorary doctorate will serve as a significant highlight for this year's festival, marking both a personal and cultural milestone.
