Mumbai Indians are likely to shake up their leadership group significantly before the IPL 2027 season following a disappointing 2026 campaign. The five-time IPL winners will have won only four of their 14 league fixtures under Hardik Pandya and not qualified for the knockout stages of the competition.
Tilak Varma was previously the front-runner in the contest to succeed Hardik Pandya as Mumbai Indians captain in case the latter departs. A fresh report, however, states that a different senior player has now joined the battle.
While Pandya's trade talk has been a major talking point for quite a while now, a star player other than Suryakumar Yadav has joined Tilak Varma in the MI captaincy race amid the speculations.
Jasprit Bumrah Emerges as Strong Captaincy Option
According to the report, the Mumbai Indians administration is viewing Bumrah as a potential captain for the franchise in the long run. Tilak, although he has been scoring steadily in the last couple of seasons, is not required to shoulder captaincy responsibility apparently at this point in his career.
According to MI think, Tilak's decision-making role might compromise his batting, as he represents one of the most reliable middle-order batsmen.
Hence, Bumrah's name has gathered momentum as a potential Hardik heir. Reportedly, the franchise's first preference is an experienced long-term captain instead of Suryakumar Yadav.

Bumrah's Captaincy Record and MI Review
Jasprit Bumrah has captained the Mumbai Indians in the IPL only once. Pitched against the Punjab Kings in 2026, he led MI to an easy six-wicket win.
Regulating Punjab Kings to 200/8, Mumbai were bowled out and joined in 19.1 overs. With a match-winning 75, Tilak Varma helped Mumbai win the match, and Bumrah got a good start as captain.
The report further stated that another ex-India captain of the Mumbai Indians team has also grabbed attention in the IPL trade business. While the player's name isn't confirmed, it is thought to be that of Suryakumar Yadav, and negotiations are still in a nascent stage.
At the same time, franchise owners of the Mumbai Indians are likely to gather in London for some sort of end-of-season review session. They are likely to evaluate the various performances of the team players and the coaching staff and make a decision on whether Hardik Pandya will be sold in the upcoming season. The head coach, Mahela Jayawardene, might also be subjected to a review.
