Tezzbuzz Desk- Political turmoil has intensified regarding the proposed constitutional amendment bill to women’s reservation and delimitation in the monsoon session of Parliament. Sharad Pawar faction’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has made its stand clear on this issue and has put a condition for support.
NCP (Sharad Pawar) working president Supriya Sule said that if a provision is made for 50 percent increase in Lok Sabha and Assembly seats after delimitation, her party may consider supporting it. He said that the government will first have to put forward this condition in official and written form. Supriya Sule said during the press conference in Mumbai that at present no such written proposal has come to her party. He said that without seeing the bill it is not possible to give a final reaction on it. Sule said that as soon as the bill comes out, she will study it and clarify the party’s stand.
He said that there is a need for broad consensus on issues like women’s reservation and delimitation. Referring to the Women’s Reservation Bill, Supriya Sule said that this law was passed in the Parliament by a very narrow margin, hence such important issues should be taken forward unanimously. Supriya Sule also told that before the press conference, she had discussed with the Congress President, Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction) leaders and senior party leaders. She said that sometimes misunderstandings arise regarding political issues, hence she has come to put forward the clear stand of the party.
At the same time, regarding the delimitation bill, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said in the Lok Sabha that the new delimitation will not harm the southern states, but will benefit them. He had said that no change has been made in the old rules of the Delimitation Commission and the elections to be held till 2029 will be held on the basis of existing seats only. Amit Shah had also said that if the model of 50 percent increase in seats is implemented then the total seats in the Lok Sabha can increase from 543 to 816. According to him, this will also increase the number of seats in the states of South India and the number of present 129 MPs can increase to around 195. Now all eyes are on what kind of strategy the opposition parties adopt after the final draft of the Delimitation Bill is released by the government.
