Samira Vishwas | July 15, 2026 5:24 PM CST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is coming to Punjab on July 17 and this is his second visit in six months. Earlier on 1 February 2026, Prime Minister Modi had come to Punjab. During that tour, he participated in the Guru Ravidas Jayanti celebrations at Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Jalandhar, renamed the Adampur airport as Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Airport and inaugurated the new civil terminal of Halwara Airport. Now in this tour, PM Modi will inaugurate e-railway projects and flag off a train from Jalandhar to Varanasi. Even though this visit of PM Modi is for the inauguration of projects, it is being seen as preparation for the 2027 elections.

On July 17, PM Modi will inaugurate the 110-year-old Jalandhar Cantonment railway station, which has been renovated by the central government under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Apart from this, he will also lay the foundation stone of another train service between Jalandhar and Varanasi. This train has been named ‘Shri Guru Ravidas Ji Maharaj’ Express.

Bharatiya Janata Party workers are very excited by this visit of PM Modi. This is because this journey is being considered a part of BJP’s election strategy. BJP is paying special attention to the Ravidassia community in Punjab. On February 1, PM Modi had come to Sachkhand Ballan, the biggest camp of Ravidassia community. Along with this, Saint Niranjan Das, head of Dera Sachkhand Ballan, has been honored with Padma Shri. Let us tell you that Ravidasiya community is the community with the largest population of Dalits in Punjab. This is the reason why BJP is making its strategy keeping this society at the center and is trying to attract the Dalit vote bank.

Sant Niranjan Das ji was honored with Padma Shri.

PM Modi will also start a train from Jalandhar to Varanasi. This train has also been named ‘Shri Guru Ravidas Ji Maharaj’ after the ideal of Ravidassia community. Let us tell you that Varanasi is the parliamentary constituency of PM Modi and Saint Ravidas was born in this Varanasi. A temple has also been built at the birthplace of Saint Ravidas in Varanasi, where thousands of devotees from Punjab go every year. In such a situation, PM Modi is trying to make strong inroads among the Ravidassia community.

Attempt to solve Doaba and Dalit equation

PM Modi is coming to Doaba region of Punjab and 33.34 percent population of this region is Dalits. Ravidasia community has the largest share among Dalits. According to the 2011 census, the total population of Doaba region was 52.08 percent and out of which 19.48 lakh people i.e. about 37 percent are Dalits. Ravidassia community has the largest population among Dalits in this region and it can be estimated from the statistics that out of the total Dalit population of 19.48 lakh, 11.88 lakh people i.e. about 61 percent come from Ravidassia community. In such a situation, if BJP is successful in winning the trust of this community, then they can get an edge in this region and this will be very important for the party.

Political mathematics of Doaba

The Doaba region of Punjab lies between the Beas and Sutlej rivers. This rich and fertile geographical region consists of four major districts which include Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr). There are a total of 23 assembly seats in this area and out of these, 8 seats are reserved for the Dalit community. There are total 117 assembly seats in Punjab. In the 2022 assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party had won one seat in this region.

While the Congress Party had suffered a setback in the entire Punjab, the party had established itself as the largest party in this region by winning 10 out of 23 seats. 10 out of 18 seats came from this region. Aam Aadmi Party had won 9 seats and Akali Dal also won one seat. However, after 2022, Aam Aadmi Party now has a total of 12 seats. Two by-elections and the Akali Dal MLA has joined the Aam Aadmi Party.

Preparation for 2027 elections

Assembly elections are to be held in Punjab early next year and the Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to contest alone in these elections. The party is trying to integrate different communities with itself. This rally of PM Modi is included in this sequence. Apart from this, to bring together the Sikh community and Jatt Sikhs, the party has made Keval Singh Dhillon the head. BJP is also continuously making changes in the organization. In such a situation, this visit of PM Modi will help BJP in Doaba region and the party is preparing the ground for the upcoming assembly elections. BJP has announced to contest alone on all 117 seats.
