New Delhi: India performed brilliantly in the first ODI against England played at Edgbaston and won by six wickets. With this victory, Team India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Captain Shubman Gill’s strong batting and Axar Patel’s all-round performance laid the foundation for India’s victory.

Gill gave a strong start with his captaincy innings

Captain Shubman Gill gave a great start to the Indian team chasing the target of 259 runs. He scored 80 runs in 75 balls, which included 11 fours and one six. However, during the match, he suffered from cramps and hamstring problems, due to which he had to retire hurt and leave the field. Despite this, his innings kept India on the path to victory.

Akshar and Sundar finished the match

After Gill’s exit, Akshar Patel and Washington Sundar took the responsibility. Both the batsmen made an unbeaten partnership of 102 runs for the fifth wicket. Akshar Patel returned unbeaten after scoring 57 runs and Sundar 52 runs. Thanks to his brilliant batting, India achieved the target in 45.2 overs.

The bowlers also showed their strength

The England team, which came to bat first after winning the toss, had made a strong start, but the Indian bowlers made a brilliant comeback. At one time England’s score was 61 runs without losing any wicket, but soon the team lost six wickets for 107 runs. Akshar Patel did wonders with the ball and took four wickets. Whereas Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar took two wickets each.

Why is this victory special for India?

This victory was special in many ways. India last defeated England at Edgbaston in 2014 and after that the host team had won eight consecutive ODI matches here. India broke England’s winning streak by defeating them on this ground after 11 years.

Apart from this, this is India’s sixth consecutive win against England in ODI cricket, which has become India’s longest winning streak between the two teams.

Team confidence increased

This victory has proved to be a confidence boost for the Indian team after the disappointing performance in the recent T20 matches against England and Ireland. The brilliant performance of captain Gill and Akshar Patel showed that the team knows very well how to make a comeback in big matches.
