Why Did Shubman Gill Leave the Field While Batting in 1st England ODI? Explained
Cricket Gully | July 15, 2026 2:39 PM CST

India skipper Shubman Gill provided the firepower to his team in the first ODI against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, before an injury blow saw him retire. Injured after smashing 80 off 75 balls in the early stages of the Indians' chase.

Gill was looking in total control while he was batting and played a few fluent strokes as India inched closer to their target. It was not long before he started to look in trouble. He appeared to be suffering from cramps.

It was the Indian physio who came onto the field and treated the skipper after he seemed to be in a lot of pain. Gill also tried to bat for a while, but continued to look in pain for a few more minutes, and then decided to walk off.

When Gill left, the target was a reachable 110 runs away for India. It remains to be seen whether it was only Gil's cramp that troubled him or whether he had incurred a more serious injury. None of the authorities has come out with any official statement as yet.

Can Shubman Gill Bat Again?

Yes, Gill had the right to go back to the crease later in the innings because he retired hurt and was not out.

Playing Conditions: Under the Laws of Cricket, a batter retired hurt on account of illness or injury shall be entitled to continue the innings should a wicket fall subsequently if they are fit enough to continue. So Gill can return to the crease if need be, later in the Indian chase.

India Lose Momentum After Gill's Exit

Gill's as brought a change in the course of the match with wickets falling at regular intervals. 26 runs later, vice-captain Shreyas Iyer was run out after a patient 53-ball 35, adding pressure to the middle order. Not long after, KL Rahul was caught behind off Josh Tongue for just a single after coming in at six.

The confusion also extended to the order. India shifted things around and moved Washington Sundar up the order to five while Axar Patel was seven. Shivam Dube, who was playing his first ODI in nearly two years, was still waiting.

India will be praying that Gill gets on top of his injury and can make his way back to the crease should the need arise for him to finish the chase.
