Ederson’s anticipated move to Manchester United appears to have fallen through.
Reports indicate that fitness concerns emerged during the Brazilian midfielder’s medical assessment for his proposed £35 million transfer to Old Trafford.
The Atalanta star had sustained a meniscus injury last season, which may not have been managed optimally, and clubs are often cautious when dealing with knee problems of this nature.
While a meniscus tear is not typically career-ending, it can lead to lingering performance issues, decreased knee stability, and long-term physical concerns.
This likely prompted INEOS to withdraw from the deal, resulting in Ederson’s return to Bergamo.
Having learned from past experiences, Manchester United adopted a more cautious approach, especially after signing Rasmus Hojlund from the same Serie A side and initially being unable to play him due to a back injury.
Now that Ederson is back with Atalanta, reports suggest that a new contract is being discussed, as the club is eager to avoid losing the 27-year-old on a free transfer next year.
Atalanta’s director Cristiano Giuntoli has confirmed the club’s intention to secure Ederson’s long-term future, sharing his candid thoughts on the situation:
“We were stunned [by Manchester United calling the Ederson deal off].”
“Now we are working on a new contract for him.”
Whether the Brazilian midfielder will accept the offer remains uncertain.
If Ederson desires a move away, he might think twice before committing to a new deal, as doing so could complicate any potential transfer.
AC Milan and Newcastle United are both reportedly interested in signing him, and there are suggestions that Manchester United might revisit the deal in the future. However, if a transfer to Old Trafford is to materialise, the two clubs would need to renegotiate all terms.
