Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa in a deal valued at £35 million ($47m). The Belgian international joins the Red Devils after a remarkable spell in the Midlands, where he played a key role in helping Villa end their long wait for a European trophy.
The Red Devils have strengthened their midfield with Tielemans’ addition, with the 29-year-old putting pen to paper on a contract that runs until June 2031. The midfielder arrives at Old Trafford following an impressive period at Aston Villa and after captaining Belgium to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
This transfer marks another significant move as United continue to rebuild their squad under new management. Reports suggest that the club had explored multiple midfield options this summer, eventually shifting focus away from a potential Ederson deal to pursue targets better suited to their evolving tactical approach.
Tielemans, who scored the opener in Aston Villa’s UEFA Europa League final triumph over Freiburg last season, expressed his joy and pride after sealing his move to the 20-time English champions.
Known as one of the Premier League’s most technically proficient midfielders, Tielemans led the division last season in breaking defensive lines per 100 passes, underlining his influence as a creative force in the middle of the pitch.
“It’s difficult to put into words how proud I am to join Manchester United. Signing for such a historic club is an incredible feeling—it’s the realisation of a dream that began when I first fell in love with football,” said Tielemans.
“I’ve been fortunate to experience success already, and that only drives me to achieve more. The ambition here is clear; everyone at the club is focused on competing for the biggest trophies in the years ahead.”
Manchester United’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, praised Tielemans for his quality and temperament, describing him as a perfect fit for the club’s current ambitions. The Belgian ranked second in the Premier League for line-breaking passes made under pressure last season—a statistic that reinforced United’s decision to pursue him.
“Youri has been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League over the past seven years. His technical ability, mentality, and ambition make him a superb addition to Manchester United,” Wilcox said.
“His consistency is exceptional, and he will bring composure, creativity, and leadership to our squad. We’re thrilled to welcome a player of his calibre and influence as we continue to develop a team capable of challenging for top honours.”
Tielemans’ arrival comes amid a major reshuffle in United’s midfield. The club has seen several changes recently, including the exit of veteran Casemiro and a long-term injury to Manuel Ugarte, prompting swift action in the transfer market to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season.
The Belgian joins a growing list of new signings at Old Trafford, as United continue to invest heavily in order to bridge the gap at the top of the Premier League. The club recently completed a £50m ($67m) move for Andrey Santos from Chelsea, signalling a clear intent to rejuvenate their midfield options for the future.
