New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has appealed to environmentalist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk to end his indefinite hunger strike, saying his campaign has already united students and young people across the country in their demand for accountability over examination irregularities.
Mahua Moitra’s Emotional Appeal
As Wangchuk’s hunger strike entered its 17th day at Jantar Mantar, Moitra shared a message on social media urging him to protect his health.
She said the movement had succeeded in bringing together the country’s youth and stressed that while the government may not value the lives of protesters, Wangchuk’s life remained important to those supporting the campaign.
Eminent Personalities Also Seek End to Fast
A day earlier, several prominent public figures, including writer Arundhati Roy, actors Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, and economist Jayati Ghosh, issued a joint appeal asking Wangchuk and the other fasting protesters to end their hunger strike.
While extending support to the protesters’ demands, they expressed concern over their deteriorating health and said the larger struggle for accountability would require their continued leadership.
Health Concerns Deepen
According to protest organizers, Wangchuk has lost over eight kilograms since beginning his fast. They said his latest medical examination showed low blood pressure and reduced blood glucose levels.
Meanwhile, AISA activist Deepak, who had also been on an indefinite fast, was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after his condition worsened. Organizers said he had lost significant body weight and doctors advised immediate hospitalization due to health risks.
Protest Continues
The agitation began on June 20, with Wangchuk joining the protest on June 28. Protest organizers continue to demand accountability over alleged examination irregularities and have called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The organizers have also urged the government to initiate dialogue, saying prolonged inaction could further endanger the health of those participating in the hunger strike.
