Youri Tielemans is reportedly close to completing a move from Aston Villa to Manchester United, with the 29-year-old Belgian midfielder preferring a switch to Old Trafford. According to The Athletic, discussions between the two clubs have reached an advanced stage.
The deal comes as something of a surprise to many observers, although personal terms are not expected to pose any difficulty should the transfer proceed to completion.
Tielemans joined Aston Villa on a free transfer in 2023 after four seasons with Leicester City. Since arriving at Villa Park, he has become a consistent performer under manager Unai Emery, making 134 appearances and playing a key role in helping Villa qualify for the UEFA Champions League and win the Europa League last season.
During his time at Leicester City, Tielemans endeared himself to the supporters, most notably by scoring the decisive goal in the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea.
It is understood that his contract at Aston Villa includes a £35 million release clause, which would secure the club a significant profit given that they acquired him without a transfer fee.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa are also expected to finalise the signing of Swiss international Johan Manzambi following his impressive performances at the World Cup.
If the move goes through, Tielemans will join Andrey Santos in bolstering Michael Carrick’s midfield options at Manchester United ahead of their return to the Champions League. The club has reportedly decided to end their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson as a result.
