Manchester United have reportedly received encouraging news in their efforts to sign Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams. The Red Devils are actively searching for a new left-back as part of their long-term plan to find a successor for Luke Shaw.
Shaw, who remains United’s longest-serving player, enjoyed a stellar 2025/26 season, featuring in all 38 Premier League matches. He became only the fifth player in the club’s Premier League history to achieve that milestone.
However, with the English defender having recently turned 31 and prone to minor injuries, INEOS are determined to strengthen the position ahead of the upcoming campaign.
A report shared by The Peoples Person revealed that United view Williams as a potential signing this summer.
INEOS have increasingly targeted players with proven Premier League experience, a strategy reflected in the recent signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea. Given Williams’ extensive top-flight experience, he is seen as an ideal candidate to eventually take over from Shaw at Old Trafford.
The Welsh international came through Liverpool’s academy but was unable to cement a regular place in the first team. In 2022, he made a permanent move to Nottingham Forest and has since developed into one of the league’s most reliable full-backs.
To date, Williams has made 142 appearances in the Premier League, contributing four goals and eight assists.
Williams’ versatility—being able to play both as a full-back and wing-back—along with his attacking instincts, makes him a strong fit for United’s style of play. The 25-year-old can operate effectively on either side of defence, and his tireless work rate would complement Michael Carrick’s tactical approach. An update regarding his future has now surfaced, likely to please United supporters.
According to TEAMtalk, Williams is open to a move to Manchester United this summer. The report states: “Manchester United and Newcastle United have both expressed interest in Nottingham Forest right-back Neco Williams, while Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring the Welsh international, TEAMtalk can confirm.”
“Sources close to the player have indicated that a transfer to Manchester United particularly appeals to Williams, despite his long-standing association with Liverpool, where he came through their youth system. The 25-year-old is believed to be open to a move amid interest from two Premier League clubs, although no formal bids have yet been made.”
Nonetheless, the report highlights that Nottingham Forest are eager to keep hold of their valuable player and have begun “constructive” discussions over a new contract. The Midlands club are prepared to offer Williams improved terms and remain optimistic that their proposal will persuade him to extend his stay at the City Ground.
However, the situation could shift rapidly if any of the interested clubs submit a formal offer. Williams remains under contract with Forest until 2029, meaning the club are in no immediate rush to sell.
Manchester United are also monitoring Lewis Hall, who has impressed recently for Newcastle United. Yet, securing the 21-year-old from St. James’ Park would likely require a significant outlay, making Williams a more financially viable alternative.
