Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have taken decisive action in the ongoing summer transfer window by activating a €10 million release clause for Aston Villa’s left-back Lucas Digne. The experienced French defender is now on the verge of sealing a return to the Parisian club, where he previously spent two seasons earlier in his career.
PSG confirm release clause activation for Villa full-back
The French champions have officially informed Aston Villa of their intention to pay Digne’s release clause. At 32, the France international has become a key target for Luis Enrique as PSG aim to strengthen their defensive ranks ahead of a major campaign following their latest European triumph.
As reported by The Athletic, this move represents a swift and calculated piece of business by the back-to-back UEFA Champions League winners. Although Digne remains under contract at Villa Park until 2028, the €10 million clause has made him a highly appealing option for PSG, who are seeking experienced players to reinforce their squad depth.
Villa’s focus turns to Maatsen as first-choice left-back
Unai Emery relied heavily on Digne during the previous season, granting him 32 Premier League starts and 11 appearances in Villa’s successful Europa League campaign, including the final itself. Despite his consistent performances, the club’s long-term plan for the left-back position now revolves around 24-year-old Ian Maatsen, who has impressed Emery and is seen as the future in that role.
This change in direction is already influencing Villa’s transfer strategy, with talks underway with AC Milan regarding a potential move for Pervis Estupinan, formerly of Brighton, as they seek to add further depth behind Maatsen.
Digne set to depart Villa Park after memorable spell
If the deal goes through as anticipated, Digne will depart Birmingham on a high note. Since joining Villa from Everton in 2022, he has played a pivotal role in the club’s renaissance and European success. His departure as an Europa League champion would be a fitting conclusion to his time in the Midlands.
According to RMC Sport, Digne is expected to sign a three-year contract with PSG, who continue their bid for dominance both in France and across Europe. The move could bring a swift reunion with his current club, as PSG are scheduled to face Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup on August 12.
Villa also preparing for possible Tielemans departure
Aston Villa could face another major exit this summer, with midfielder Youri Tielemans in advanced negotiations over a switch to Manchester United. The Belgian international has a £35 million release clause in his contract, giving Villa little leverage to retain him should United decide to activate it. The Red Devils are reportedly eager to finalise the transfer before the start of pre-season.
