According to a report by SPORT, FC Barcelona have officially submitted a request to La Liga for authorisation to hold all their home fixtures in the first half of the 2027-28 season at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Montjuic. This move is planned to accommodate ongoing major renovations at the Spotify Camp Nou.
The request coincides with the club’s preparations for the installation of a new roof at Camp Nou, which represents a key phase in the stadium’s redevelopment project. The construction of the roof is expected to commence in June 2027.
Although the roof installation is estimated to take around four and a half months, with completion anticipated by mid-October 2027, Barcelona have decided to adopt a cautious approach. To avoid logistical challenges or delays that could disrupt the season, the club has proposed playing all home games for the first half of the campaign at Montjuic.
La Liga, under the leadership of president Javier Tebas, has not yet issued an official response to Barcelona’s proposal.
Barcelona’s plan is also designed in line with UEFA’s competition regulations. As per UEFA rules, clubs must host all their league-phase home matches in the same stadium during a given European season. To comply with this requirement and prevent any mid-season venue changes, Barcelona intend to play all their early-season home fixtures, including UEFA Champions League matches, at the Montjuic Stadium.
In addition to the installation of the new roof, the club has scheduled further improvement works around the Camp Nou complex during this time. If approved, this arrangement would mark another temporary return to Montjuic for the Catalan club. Barcelona previously played two full seasons at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys during the earlier phases of Camp Nou’s redevelopment in 2023-24 and 2024-25.
During the 2025-26 campaign, Barcelona began their La Liga season with two matches at the Estadi Johan Cruyff and later played three games at Montjuic, along with two UEFA Champions League fixtures, before finally returning to the newly renovated Spotify Camp Nou.
For the 2026-27 season, the club expects to play all its home matches at the Spotify Camp Nou. The stadium is set to reopen officially with the Joan Gamper Trophy on August 19, with the opponent yet to be announced.
Barcelona’s first La Liga home match of the upcoming season is scheduled for either August 29 or 30 against Rayo Vallecano. The original opening fixture against Athletic Club was postponed due to the involvement of several players from both teams in the World Cup semifinals.
Meanwhile, renovation work at Camp Nou has continued throughout the summer under the supervision of Turkish contractor Limak. The club’s short-term goal is to open a section of the third tier in October, pending approval from the Barcelona City Council. This part of the stadium will be reopened gradually until it reaches full capacity later in the season.
