FIFA Argentina vs England Rivalry: The second semi-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 is to be played between Argentina and England. Before the semi-finals, the former England footballer has given a big statement. Former England footballer Joe Cole believes that the England team will be successful in stopping Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026. This match between the two teams will be played at the Atlanta Stadium.
The England team will take the field against Argentina for the first time in 21 years. The football rivalry between England and Argentina is very old. Both the teams have come face to face five times so far in the World Cup. These include the matches of 1962, 1966, 1986, 1998 and 2002. In the last encounter in Japan, England had defeated Argentina on the basis of David Beckham’s penalty.
Argentina is the world champion
Argentina is the current world champion. The team won the World Cup title in Qatar in 2022. This was Argentina’s third World Cup title and the team had the honor of becoming world champion after 36 years. However, Joe Cole believes that England’s strong attacking ability will prove to be a big challenge for Argentina.

Played quarter final with Switzerland
It faced Switzerland in the quarter finals. After 90 minutes of play, both the teams were tied at 1-1. After this, Julian Alvarez scored the second goal for Argentina, while Lautaro Martínez scored the third goal to ensure the team’s 3–1 victory. Earlier, Argentina had made a brilliant comeback against Egypt in the Round of 16. The team was trailing 2-0 at one point, but scored three goals in the last 13 minutes to win the match 3-2.
Argentina also faced a tough challenge in the Round of 32. Cape Verde, playing for the first time in the FIFA World Cup, was forced to struggle till extra time. However, Argentina won 3–2 thanks to an own goal from Cape Verde. Argentina defeated Algeria, Austria and Jordan in the group stage. Along with France, they are the team of this tournament which has won all the matches so far.
