The political atmosphere in Bangladesh is at its peak regarding the return of Sheikh Hasina. Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) Aminul Islam has given a very strict statement regarding former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He has bluntly said that Hasina does not need to wait for ‘December’, she should return to Bangladesh ‘tomorrow itself’. Responding to Hasina’s recent statements, she has made it clear that the path of law is not going to be so easy for her in Bangladesh.
No chance to surrender, Hasina will go straight to jail
Sheikh Hasina had recently announced that she would return to Dhaka later this year along with leaders of her party ‘Awami League’ and surrender in the court. But Aminul Islam has rejected it outright. He said, “Whether you come in December or January, it is your choice, but our demand is that you come tomorrow itself.” He also clarified that if the Indian government hands him over to Bangladesh under the Extradition Treaty, he will not get any legal chance. He will be sent directly to jail, as the death penalty verdict has already been pronounced against him.
‘Hasina is under the control of the Indian government’
The Chief Prosecutor emphasized that Sheikh Hasina is currently under the protection and control of the Government of India. She said she couldn’t come back by herself; They will either be sent to Bangladesh through extradition treaty or India will hand them back. Not only this, Aminul Islam has also given a strong warning to Sheikh Hasina against creating any kind of instability in the country. His party Awami League has already been banned in Bangladesh and several serious cases have been registered against him.
Hasina is in India after the events of 2024
Recall that in June-July 2024, the student demonstration over job reservation in Bangladesh had turned violent. The situation had worsened so much that the protesters had moved towards the PM’s residence. Amidst this chaos, Sheikh Hasina came to India by helicopter on 5 August 2024 and since then she is living here. For Hasina, who ruled Bangladesh for almost 20 years, the path to return to her country is now very thorny, because the Dhaka court has found her guilty of ‘crimes against humanity’ and has sentenced her to death.
