See oil stains under the car? Know 5 main causes of oil leaking from bike

Oil leaking from the engine or undercarriage of the bike is a major headache for bike owners. Engine oil works like blood for a car engine. So if the oil continues to leak, there is a high risk of engine jamming or damage. Often we ignore it, but it is important to find this problem in time. Following are the main causes of oil leakage from bikes:

1. Gasket failure

When connecting different parts of the engine, a ‘gasket’ is a type of seal used to keep the connection tight and prevent oil leakage. The constant heat and aging of the engine causes this gasket to harden, crack or tear. Especially the oil leakage from the clutch cover, magneto cover or engine head gasket is high.

2. Oil seal failure

Small rubber ‘oil seals’ are fitted on the side of the gear shaft, kick shaft and sprocket of the car. These moving parts and friction cause oil seal wear during driving. As the rubber hardens or tears, the oil slowly drips down the side of the gear lever or kick.

3. Loose or damaged drain plug

A ‘drain bolt’ or plug is provided at the very bottom of the engine to drain the old oil. If the mechanic doesn’t tighten this bolt properly when changing the oil, or replace the small aluminum washer in between, it will continue to leak oil. Sometimes the thread of the bolt is damaged.

4. Overfilling engine oil

Every bike engine has a fixed oil storage capacity (eg 900 ml or 1 litre). If the car is overfilled with oil, excessive pressure builds up inside the engine. To relieve this excess pressure, oil begins to escape through the engine’s breather pipe or a weak seal.

5. Cracking of engine casing

This usually happens on bad roads or due to an accident. If a large stone or speed breaker hits the lower part of the engine while driving, small cracks occur in the aluminum casing of the engine, through which oil continues to leak.

Important:If you see oil dripping down the bike after parking it, get it checked by a mechanic immediately. Replacing a small seal or gasket in time can save a lot of engine money.
