The danger of ‘high-beam’ in the night journey and the light shining on the eyes! How to avoid the death trap of this accident?

While traveling on highways or major roads at night, drivers face a major and fatal problem, which is the glare of oncoming vehicles. Drivers keep their car headlights on ‘high-beam’ continuously at night. This completely blinds the other oncoming driver, cuts off visibility of the road, and results in a horrific accident within seconds.

High-beamWhat exactly is the risk??

When a car approaches the high-beams in front, its intense light causes the pupils of the rear driver’s eyes to suddenly constrict. In scientific and medical terms this is called ‘glare’ or ‘night blindness’.

Due to this intense light, the driver cannot see potholes, dividers or pedestrians crossing the road for a few seconds. If the car is running at a speed of 80 to 100 km per hour, this blindness of only 3 seconds is enough to send the car out of control. Thousands of accidents occur every year due to this human carelessness.

AutodimmingWhy is technology important??

It is difficult to fully control this problem through traffic rules or fines alone. Hence, in the modern automobile sector ‘autodimming headlight technology’ also known as automatic high-beam assist. This has become the need of the day.

How does this technology work??

In this system, cameras and sensors are installed on the front glass or bumper of the car. When these sensors detect the light of an oncoming vehicle or the tail-light of the following vehicle, they automatically shift the car’s headlights from ‘high-beam’ to ‘low-beam’. When the vehicle in front passes, the headlights automatically switch to high-beam if the road is dark again.

of this technology benefits

This technology eliminates the need for the driver to dim-full the lights manually. Driving at night is extremely safe as the front driver’s eyes are not illuminated.

Brief advice

Currently, this safety feature is offered in many expensive cars and premium models in India. However, in view of increasing road accidents, the government needs to make this technology mandatory in all types of vehicles. Until this technology is available in all cars, every driver should take it upon themselves to practice keeping their headlights on ‘low-beam’ when oncoming vehicles are approaching. One should remember that a small precaution on our part can save someone’s precious life.
