Manchester United have reportedly activated the £35 million release clause of Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans, marking a significant step in their summer transfer plans.

The move follows the breakdown of United’s proposed deal for Brazilian midfielder Éderson, whose transfer collapsed after complications during an extended medical assessment.

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils have now turned their attention to Tielemans, who has already given a verbal agreement to join the club. The Belgian midfielder brings a wealth of Premier League experience, which is believed to be a key factor in United’s pursuit.

The 29-year-old first arrived in the Premier League midway through the 2018/19 season, joining Leicester City on loan from AS Monaco. After impressing with the Foxes, he made the move permanent and later joined Aston Villa on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 following Leicester’s relegation to the Championship.

During the most recent season, Tielemans made 35 appearances across all competitions for Aston Villa, contributing two goals and seven assists. His performances were consistent and influential, establishing him as a key figure in Villa’s midfield setup.

On the international stage, Tielemans represented Belgium at the 2026 World Cup, where he scored twice in the knockout phase against Senegal, further enhancing his reputation as a dynamic and composed midfielder capable of performing on football’s biggest stage.

If the deal is finalised, Tielemans’ addition would strengthen Manchester United’s midfield options significantly, bringing both creativity and top-flight experience to Erik ten Hag’s squad as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
