Ryan Blaney showcased dominant pace and swept all stages at EchoPark Speedway in Atlanta to secure victory in the NASCAR Cup Series race. The event, however, extended several hours longer than scheduled due to weather delays, keeping fans engaged well into the early hours of Monday morning.
After clinching pole position during Saturday’s qualifying session, Blaney lined up at the front alongside his Team Penske colleague, Joey Logano. Blaney proceeded to win both stages and led 171 of the 260 laps. However, after the first 150 laps of the opening two stages, rain and lightning forced officials to halt the race for nearly three hours under a red flag condition.
During the lengthy delay, Blaney admitted to Josh Sims of TNT Sports that he took a short nap to recharge.
When racing resumed, Blaney looked refreshed and continued to set the pace during the final stage, engaging in a close fight with Bubba Wallace of 23XI Racing. With 29 laps remaining, Blaney tapped the wall, scraping concrete and paint into his wheel well, while AJ Allmendinger crashed into the wall behind him. Despite the contact, the No. 12 Team Penske Ford crew chose not to pit, as there appeared to be no significant damage to the right side of his Ford Mustang or its tires.
On the first of three restarts following the wall contact, Blaney reported a vibration but managed to continue until the next caution, triggered when Kyle Larson spun on the front stretch with 20 laps left. Larson, who was running eighth, struck the wall exiting Turn Four and slid across the grass.
Racing resumed with 14 laps to go, and Carson Hocevar, who had been competitive in the early stages before falling back, surged to the lead on the restart.
With ten laps remaining, Blaney regained the top spot with assistance from Christopher Bell, who gave him a strong push.
As the top seven drivers jostled for position nearing the finish, a major collision involving Larson, Riley Herbst, and Chase Briscoe brought out NASCAR overtime.
Starting second for the restart, Hocevar lightened the mood by singing 'Died in Your Arms Tonight' by Cutting Crew, joking that the tune was stuck in his head and had been played by his spotter before the green flag.
During the overtime restart, Tyler Reddick pushed Blaney into the lead, while Wallace trailed closely behind Hocevar. Shane van Gisbergen also climbed into the top five with two laps remaining in the intense Atlanta shuffle.
Hocevar took the white flag in front, but Blaney made his move on the final lap to reclaim the lead as the pack spread out once more. Wallace briefly went below the yellow line to gain a position in the lead battle but ultimately crossed the finish in third, the same position he held entering Turn Four. However, his temporary move below the line led to a penalty.
According to NASCAR regulations, Wallace was penalized and moved to the back of the lead lap, nullifying his third-place finish and officially placing him 29th. After the race, Wallace, crew chief Charles Denike, and 23XI Racing’s team director Dave Rogers met with NASCAR officials to review video footage and contest the penalty, but the ruling was upheld.
Christopher Bell of Joe Gibbs Racing, who played a key role in propelling Blaney’s Ford to the front during several late restarts, finished fifth for the second consecutive week and collected his fifth top-five result of the season.
Carson Hocevar claimed third place, followed by Ty Gibbs and Erik Jones.
Shane van Gisbergen secured sixth position, earning his third top-ten finish on an oval circuit, ahead of Austin Dillon and Tyler Reddick, who became the first driver to lock in a spot in the Chase. Denny Hamlin finished 12th and is expected to join Reddick in the playoff field soon.
