New Delhi: A massive fire engulfed a bar in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok late Sunday night. The blaze killed at least 27 people and left several others severely injured. People were seen rushing out of the building as flames engulfed the entrance and in minutes smoke filled the building.
The blaze was reported from the Na Ladprao pub in northern Bangkok. According to fire brigade officials they received information regarding the fire at the pub, past midnight. The firefighters took around 30 minutes to put out the fire.
Smoke likely caused deaths inside bar: Bangkok GovernorThailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene and said that the cause of the fire remained unknown as of now. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt meanwhile said, that the fire spread very quickly across the building.
Talking to reporters, Sittipunt said that the fire spread through the building very quickly. It reached up to the ceiling. Smoke was likely the primary of the deaths inside the pub, he added.
The Governor confirmed 27 deaths and said that at least 63 people were moved to the hospital. Of the 63 in hospital, 22 are still in a critical condition, according to Sittipunt.
Authorities have started an investigation into the fire incident. Officials said that they found several of the victims lying either dead or injured near a fire exit. This led them to believe that a possible obstruction at this gate, led to people not being able to escape, when the fire started.
The Governor said that so far, there is no clarity on how many people were inside the bar at the time of the fire. But, he said there were likely many people inside, when the blaze started.
Thailand PM Anutin Charnvirakul said that a musician performing inside the bar told him that he noticed smoke coming from a circuit breaker near the stage, reported NDTV. According to the performer, shortly after this the lights went off, as the electricity failed. Just a few moments later, a loud explosion happened and fire and smoke engulfed the building, the musician reportedly told the PM.
Meanwhile, Thai authorities have started an investigation in the matter. They are looking at the possible cause of the fire and if no proper emergency exit was the reason for the high death figures recorded in the tragedy.
