New Delhi,  July 13:

New voters applying for inclusion in electoral rolls must now furnish details of their parents’ status in the previous Special Intensive Revision (SIR), with the Election Commission making the declaration mandatory for online registration.

The requirement has been added to the online version of Form 6, used by first-time voters and fresh applicants. Applicants must indicate whether their own name or that of a parent or grandparent appeared in the previous SIR rolls, along with supporting details such as constituency, polling booth and serial number. Those lacking such information can opt for a third category, though its implications remain unclear.

Officials said the move, introduced through administrative instructions without a formal amendment to electoral rules, aims to streamline voter verification and reduce documentation requirements. The provision was first implemented during Bihar’s SIR exercise and has since been extended to other states.

The development comes amid a nationwide push to clean up electoral rolls by removing duplicate, deceased, shifted and ineligible voters, following large-scale deletions reported in several states.
