New Associate Member for ICC as USA and Canada stay suspended

Mauritius has become the International Cricket Council's (ICC) newest Associate Member following the governing body's Annual Conference in Edinburgh, taking the ICC's global membership to 111 nations. According to Cricbuzz, the Mauritius Cricket Federation (MCF) was formally admitted during the meeting, increasing the tally to 12 Full Members and 99 Associate Members.

Alongside the expansion, the ICC decided to retain the suspensions of USA Cricket (USAC) and Cricket Canada, while France Cricket was placed on notice. The conference, which began on July 8, concluded on July 11 after discussions on governance and the future direction of the game.

USA and Canada remain in suspension

The ICC reviewed the situations involving USA Cricket and Cricket Canada but opted to maintain the existing status for both organisations. USA Cricket has remained suspended since September 2025, with the governing body acknowledging the importance of resolving the issue ahead of cricket's return at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

However, no timeline for reinstatement was announced. Cricket Canada, which was suspended in June, will also continue to remain outside the ICC fold as it works through internal governance matters. The nature of those issues has not been publicly detailed.

There has also been discussion over a possible Canadian franchise in Major League Cricket, although the ICC has not indicated that it will influence future decisions on Canada's membership.

No WTC expansion or ODI overhaul approved

The Annual Conference did not produce any decision on expanding the World Test Championship to a 12-team competition by including Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe. Likewise, there was no approval for reducing One-Day Internationals from 50 overs to 40 overs despite recent speculation.

Instead, member boards received presentations outlining the ICC's strategy for its next commercial and governance cycle, though details of those discussions have not been released. JioStar, the ICC's official media rights partner, also made a presentation during the conference.

With Mauritius joining the ICC family and governance matters involving the United States, Canada and France still unresolved, the governing body concluded its annual meeting without introducing any major structural changes to the international playing calendar or competition formats.
