Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount is reportedly preparing to take on a new role under head coach Michael Carrick as the team gears up for the upcoming season.
The Red Devils are currently revamping their midfield setup in anticipation of their Champions League campaign and a potential push for the Premier League title.
Casemiro has already departed following the expiry of his contract. The five-time Champions League winner is expected to join David Beckham’s Major League Soccer side, Inter Miami.
Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte is recovering from an ACL injury sustained while representing Uruguay before their World Cup exit. Initially listed for transfer, Ugarte is now expected to be sidelined for several months.
This situation leaves Kobbie Mainoo as the only senior and fully fit central midfielder available at the club. Although England are performing well at the World Cup, Mainoo has yet to make an appearance. Alongside Ivan Toney from the Saudi Pro League and late addition Trevoh Chalobah, he remains one of the few players yet to feature for the Three Lions.
Manchester United have reached an agreement with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, with an official announcement expected soon. Reports indicate that Santos will wear the number 17 shirt at Old Trafford.
There was also the ongoing situation involving Ederson. United had agreed terms with Atalanta for the Brazilian midfielder, but the completion of the deal was contingent on his medical results. Subsequent reports suggested potential medical concerns, prompting a deeper review of the case.
On Friday, Fabrizio Romano reported that Manchester United had decided to withdraw from the transfer. Ederson has since left the United Kingdom and is reportedly disappointed by how the situation unfolded.
The club continues to explore other midfield options, with players such as Ayyoub Bouaddi, Manu Kone, Adam Wharton, Alex Scott, and Carlos Baleba all believed to be under consideration.
According to Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun, Mount is expected to be used in a slightly different capacity under Carrick, who has a defined tactical vision for him.
Luckhurst noted, “Mason Mount is prepared to operate in a deeper midfield position at Manchester United to help address the team’s midfield shortage.”
He added, “Mount’s strong performances toward the conclusion of last season have effectively secured his place at the club, and head coach Michael Carrick values his energy and adaptability.”
With Mainoo still on an extended post-World Cup break, Mount is likely to start in midfield when Manchester United begin their pre-season fixtures.
During the 2025/26 Premier League season, Mount made 23 appearances and scored three goals for the club.
