More than 1.7 crore (17 million) taxpayers have filed their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, the Income Tax Department announced on Saturday, urging eligible individuals to complete the filing process before the July 31 deadline.
In a post on social media platform X, the department said over 1.7 crore taxpayers have already filed their returns, with more than 10 lakh (1 million) ITRs submitted on Friday alone, reflecting a sharp surge in filings as the due date draws near.
The deadline for filing ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-2 for income earned during the financial year 2025-26 is July 31.
ITR-1 (Sahaj) is a simplified return form meant for resident individuals with an annual income of up to ?50 lakh. It is applicable to taxpayers earning income from salary or pension, owning one house property, and having agricultural income of up to Rs.5,000 in a financial year.
On the other hand, ITR-2 is intended for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who do not have income from business or profession but earn income from sources such as capital gains, multiple house properties or other specified sources.
The Income Tax Department has been consistently encouraging taxpayers to file their returns well ahead of the deadline to avoid last-minute technical issues, reduce filing errors and ensure quicker processing of refunds.
As the due date approaches, the department has also begun sending reminder messages and alerts to taxpayers who are yet to file their returns. The initiative aims to minimise the last-minute rush, which often leads to delays, system congestion and avoidable mistakes.
Tax officials have advised eligible taxpayers to complete the filing process at the earliest to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.
