Why do clothes start smelling in the rain?
During monsoon, there is more moisture in the air and less sunlight. In such a situation, clothes remain wet for a long time, due to which bacteria and fungus start growing in them. This is the reason why clothes start smelling damp and the risk of skin problems like ringworm, itching or allergy can increase.
1. Do not leave wet clothes in the washing machine
After washing clothes, take them out of the machine immediately. Due to being left in the machine for a long time, bacteria and fungus grow rapidly in them, due to which the clothes start smelling strongly.
2. Wash less clothes at once
It takes more time for clothes to dry in the rain. Therefore, instead of washing a lot of clothes at once, wash them in small quantities. Squeeze the clothes thoroughly and dry them by spreading them apart, so that air can circulate easily.
3. Use white vinegar
Add about half a cup of white vinegar during the last wash of clothes. This reduces the smell of clothes and also removes detergent residues. After drying, the smell of vinegar disappears completely.
4. Add baking soda
Washing clothes by mixing half a cup of baking soda with detergent helps in removing odors from clothes, towels and sheets. Besides, the clothes also remain soft.
5. Dry in a ventilated place
If the sun is not shining, dry the clothes in a place where there is good air flow. Drying clothes under the window, balcony or fan removes moisture quickly.
6. Keep adequate distance between clothes
Do not hang clothes too close to each other on the drying stand. Leaving a little space between the clothes allows air to pass through easily and the clothes dry quickly.
7. Use a fan, exhaust fan or dehumidifier
If you have to dry clothes inside the house during continuous rain, then run a fan, exhaust fan or dehumidifier. This reduces the humidity in the room and the clothes dry quickly.
8. Iron when there is slight moisture
If the clothes are almost dry but there is slight moisture left in them, ironing removes the remaining moisture. This can also reduce odor causing bacteria.
9. Keep clothes outside as soon as the sun comes out
If the sun comes out even for a short while amidst the rain, take full advantage of it. Sunlight naturally helps reduce bacteria and maintains the freshness of clothes.
10. Wash towels and gym clothes separately
Towel, denim and gym clothes absorb more moisture. By washing and drying them separately from light clothes, the smell does not spread to other clothes.
11. Protect cupboards from moisture
Silica gel sachets, baking soda, activated charcoal or cedar wood can be kept inside the cupboard. These help in absorbing excess moisture and keep the clothes fresh for a longer period.
12. Keep clothes only after they are completely dry.

Keeping slightly wet clothes in the cupboard can cause mold to grow in them and the bad smell can spread to other clothes as well. Therefore, fold the clothes only after they dry completely.
It is very important to take proper care of clothes during the rainy season. By washing them properly, drying them thoroughly and keeping them in a dry place, the problems of dampness, bad smell and fungus in clothes can be avoided to a great extent.
