Karl Darlow set to become the first Leeds United player in 22 years to join Manchester United

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow appears ready to end a 22-year gap by making a move from Elland Road to Old Trafford this summer. The 35-year-old shot-stopper is currently a free agent after his contract with Leeds expired at the end of last month.

According to reports from the Yorkshire Evening Post, Darlow is close to sealing a transfer to Manchester United, a move that would make him only the seventh player to make the switch directly across the Pennines from West Yorkshire to the red half of Manchester.

Although Leeds United had offered Darlow a contract extension, he seems to have opted for a new challenge instead of extending his stay at Elland Road.

The last player to make such a controversial move was Alan Smith, whose £7 million transfer to Manchester United caused uproar among Leeds supporters, as Smith had grown up a passionate fan of the Whites.

Meanwhile, the most recent transfer in the opposite direction took place when Daniel James moved from Manchester United to Leeds United in a £25 million deal. While direct player exchanges between these fierce rivals have been uncommon, both clubs have, at various times, signed notable players from the other. This article looks back at all 17 players who have crossed the historic divide between Leeds United and Manchester United.
