Leeds United appear set to miss out on bringing back Karl Darlow, as the experienced goalkeeper is reportedly close to joining Manchester United following discussions regarding a new contract at Elland Road.

As reported by The Athletic, talks between Manchester United and Darlow are at an advanced stage, with the Red Devils eager to secure an experienced backup to their first-choice keeper, Senne Lammens.

Darlow, 35, became a free agent after his contract with Leeds expired at the end of last month. Although Leeds held talks over an extension, both Manchester United and Everton have made offers, and it now seems that Leeds’ proposal has failed to meet the player’s expectations.

Lammens is expected to continue as the main goalkeeper after an impressive debut season following his £18 million move from Royal Antwerp. Darlow is seen as a potential deputy. Altay Bayindir currently occupies that backup role but is anticipated to depart during the summer transfer window.

Darlow concluded last season as Leeds’ first-choice goalkeeper, taking over from £16 million signing Lucas Perri in January following costly mistakes against Manchester United and Newcastle. The veteran made 22 Premier League starts, including a notable 2-1 win at Old Trafford in April, and contributed to five of Leeds’ eight clean sheets across the campaign.

Manager Daniel Farke’s squad currently has only one senior goalkeeper, Lucas Perri, who endured a difficult season. With Darlow likely to move on, Leeds will now be under increased pressure to strengthen their goalkeeping department with at least one new signing before the season begins.
