Argentina vs Switzerland preview: Can Lionel Messi inspire a semi-final clash with England?

Argentina have enjoyed a relatively smooth path to the 2026 World Cup semi-finals, though they have managed to make that route appear far more challenging than anticipated.

The upcoming Argentina vs Switzerland encounter will determine who secures a place among the final four and earns the right to face either England or Norway in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals.

Few would have imagined that the reigning 2022 World Champions would be pushed to their limits by Cape Verde and Egypt — two spirited nations that captured neutral hearts — yet that is exactly what transpired.

Compared to the journeys of Spain, France, and England, Argentina’s route to the semi-final has been notably less demanding. The key question now is whether they can advance with greater confidence and composure against Switzerland.

Lionel Messi has been outstanding throughout this tournament, but can a sequence of fixtures against Algeria, Austria, Jordan, Cape Verde, and Egypt truly define his campaign?

Messi currently finds himself in a tight Golden Boot battle with Kylian Mbappe — widely regarded as one of the most prolific World Cup performers ever — and standing between them and another potential final showdown with France are Switzerland, followed by either Norway or England.

There can be no justification for Messi not to deliver in this crucial tie, nor for Argentina to fall short of a convincing victory.

Switzerland, to their credit, boast a structured and resilient team built to handle high-pressure situations. However, they lack both the star quality and the weight of expectation that accompany the South American giants.

If the Swiss are to pull off an upset, it will likely come from the freedom born of having little to lose. Argentina, however, are in desperate need of a dominant performance to reaffirm their credentials.

The narrow escapes against Cape Verde and Egypt did little to enhance Argentina’s image and could signal deeper issues when they come up against elite nations later in the tournament — provided they advance.

Argentina’s heavy dependence on Messi has made them overly predictable and hesitant. Their tendency to funnel play through him at every opportunity has stifled creativity and left them vulnerable to smaller teams capable of exploiting that rigidity.

That overreliance has prevented Argentina from fully expressing their collective quality, and Switzerland will surely look to capitalise on any lingering uncertainty.

Nevertheless, world champions rarely allow poor form to linger. Switzerland may fight bravely, but they appear destined to be on the receiving end of Argentina’s revival.

This could well be the first knockout victory of the tournament for Argentina achieved without controversy or excessive strain.

And naturally, the driving force behind that will be Lionel Messi, who will look to inspire his side towards a semi-final battle with England or Norway — a stage where he can once again prove his brilliance against top-tier opposition.

Prediction: Argentina 2-0 Switzerland
