Switzerland will have to take the field without midfielder Johan Manzambi in their upcoming FIFA World Cup quarter-final clash against Argentina.
The SC Freiburg player, who missed Switzerland’s round of 16 victory over Colombia that went to penalties, continues to struggle with a knee injury and has not recovered in time for the crucial match.
“We did everything possible to bring him back, but unfortunately, he won’t be fit to play tomorrow,” Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin stated at a pre-match press conference. “Johan Manzambi is in considerable pain. It came as a shock to all of us. He had built great momentum, and there’s always such joy when he’s on the pitch.”
Manzambi has been one of the standout performers for Switzerland in this tournament, contributing three goals and two assists in his first four appearances at the World Cup. His absence will be a significant blow as the Swiss look to secure a semi-final spot against a strong Argentine side.
