Leeds United face crucial summer as Meslier departs and Darlow nears Manchester United move, goalkeeper search intensifies

Leeds United once again find themselves prioritising the goalkeeping position this summer, just a year after their return to the Championship. As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, the club has reached an agreement to extend Alex Cairns’ stay, while also showing interest in Japan international Zion Suzuki and England’s James Trafford.

The uncertainty began when Karl Darlow replaced Illan Meslier during the 2024/25 season run-in. Leeds subsequently invested £16 million to sign Lucas Perri on a four-year contract. Perri’s debut season, however, proved challenging — he was dropped following matches against Manchester United and Newcastle United in January, later appearing only four more times in the FA Cup.

Despite those difficulties, Leeds’ transfer activity last summer yielded decent results, culminating in a 14th-place finish. The remaining gaps identified were on the right wing or in the No. 10 position, and most importantly, in goal. The free signing of Harry Wilson has since covered the attacking requirement.

The situation has evolved further since then. Meslier’s anticipated exit materialised with a move to Arsenal, and Darlow is now reportedly close to joining Manchester United on a free transfer. As it stands, Lucas Perri is the only senior goalkeeper available to manager Daniel Farke.

Had Darlow agreed to a contract extension, Leeds might have delayed appointing a new first-choice goalkeeper. With that possibility gone, immediate action is necessary.

Reports indicate that both Suzuki and Trafford would command transfer fees in excess of £30 million each — a considerable investment at a time when the new Squad Cost Ratio regulations are restricting club spending. Whether Leeds opt to secure a long-term solution now or postpone the decision while strengthening other areas remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that the club faces another eventful summer in its pursuit of stability between the posts.
